A Journey with a Dash of Embellishment

This blog chronicles a tenaciously unplanned and meandering trip around the continent of North America (and maybe, eventually, beyond). Cheap buses, rideshare, a network of friends, and couchsurfing are some of the tools that will define the way this journey unfolds.  A geeky, queer, postmodern, road trip. I probably left out a lot of applicable adjectives, I’ll add them as I discover them.

I’m always open to new places to see, or tools to add to my arsenal, or people to meet, so if you’ve got any suggestions, let me know.

The name of this blog is partly an homage to Blue Highways , one of the narratives that inspired this wanderlust in me as a young person. (Others being the journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and Lord of the Rings, and probably even Homeward Bound.) I won’t fictionalize things any more than anyone does when telling an anecdote, but I will invariably end up interpreting my experiences through the aforementioned narratives, along with uncountable others, so while some of my highways may be blue, they’ll all be fictionalized to some extent.

I hope you enjoy reading my ramblings about them.

I spent some time with Google Maps creating a visual and interactive chronicle of my journey so far. It’s a work in progress–as is the journey itself–but I had fun making it, so you might have fun poking around in it.
